Posted 07/06/2010 by kingstumps70 Great trail, longer than I thought, but the unbearable heat, overgrowth and biting flies everywhere demoralized us.A couple of huge downed tree sections had us confused for a minute and wishing we had chainsaws.Plan on coming again but not until it cools off a bit. | Posted 06/15/2010 by Kevin Preston Rode the new SS this morning. The trail east of the road is in pretty good shape. West of the road is a different story; a lot of wet muddy spots. We definitely need to get back to having trail days at Golden Hill. |

Mountain Bike Trail Description
|
Description: Golden Hill is fun! It's not as extensive as Rock City/McCarty
Hill/Holiday Valley, but there's plenty of riding there. It is
easier than the trails closer to Ellicottville, and harder to get
lost. There are two loops. The red loop is the main loop,
with half on one side of the road, the other on the other side.
The red trail is a nice rolling singletrack with a a fair amount of up
and down, but is mainly characterized by its excellent flow.
Kudos to Bert Schweigart for a good eye for flow. Most people
ride the trail counterclockwise, but it flows well either way.
Most riders take the blue loop which leaves from (and returns to) the
northwest side of the red trail. This section is more technical
and hilly. It also has great flow as it surfs the edge of a spur
before dropping into a hole of a valley. A short miniloop circles
around the bottom of the blue loop to add some more distance. The
climb back up is a bear but a small price for the drop down into the
hole.
If you are so inclined, checkout the technical "whammy" halfway back
up. You lose some of your hard earned elevation gain, but get to
test your technical ability, if you don't mind scraping yourself up on
the hard rocks. Just don't hurt yourself and expect someone to
drag you out, because it's pretty inaccessible.
The top part of the climb on an old road is scheduled for an upgrade
sometime in 2004 to add some climbing turns and remove the fall line
road section.

| Directions: From Ellicottville, head out of town on Mill (next to the convenience store, making sure you go under hte train tracks. Go until it ends and then take a left on Rt. 98. Then look for Golden Hill Road on your right. Park at the top of the hill. Trailhead is just up the ridgetop (Fireline) road (either side) |
