TOPIC: Ellicottville directions?

Re: Ellicottville directions? 1 year, 1 month ago #40825

i read up on it, you can convert the gps file to a tcx file with this site:

www.gpsies.com/convert.do

then import it into garmin training center. Now I'm unclear about how to put it on my device. I lost interest and the map seemed easier, but I'll revisit it later with a Genny.

I plan on doing a spirited ride at EVL on Saturday. If anyone wants to ride along I can make it a semi educational experience. Probably do the "whole" 26 mile option from earlier link but that can be adjusted on the fly as riders start to crack.

As far as the GPX goes, I ran through it wth my 705 and the procedure was as follows:
Download the GPX file to my computer (both this site and mapmyride.com provide .gpx downloads).
Copy GPX to Garmin GPX folder.
Menu > Saved Rides > Select GPX that I just copied > Map Setup > Check Show on Map > OK

At this point the route is highlighted by a series of dots that will just remain static on the map. If you ride off the route you'll see your little dotted line diverge from the fatter route dotted line. That's pretty much it.
Opinions are like pimples, they vary in amount and cover different areas.

There is no or, you're going to lose it.

Thanks for the info on the GPS. I'm planning on heading down for a few hours Sunday afternoon with a buddy of mine. He hasn't ridden in a long time though so we'll just have to see how things go.

You can download those tracks from Map Your Rideas a TCX, so you don't have to convert a GPX. That said, I just drop a GPX into the saved rides folder (or something similar) of my Garmin 605 and then I can make it show up on the screen. I forget the exact sequence of menu selections and I don't have my Garmin here to check. On the road, it can even give you turn-by-turn directions. I did that for a one-way ride I did from Albany to my brother's house in Connecticut last year over roads I've never seen before. Was great not having to stop and look at maps. However, it has a glitch that it basically was telling me to turn every time there was a bend in the road. Obviously you don't want turn-by-turn in the woods. You can get it to show up as a just a thick line on the maps instead.

i've been riding eville for a few years, i usually park at the bottom of the ski hills, head up the dirt road, and then ride the large race loop 2-3 times(i think the total loop is supposed to be 12 miles i'm told?), then back down. the best time to get used to this loop is around when they do one of the races and there are signs(i just know it now)

every so often i start at the bottom and go to little rock city and back, depends on how we are feeling

i'm always up to be a guide if anyone wants to join our small group
