Great re-route project at Sprague Brook Park on Saturday. Lots of folks turned out for a 4 hour benching project.
Everyone is getting fired up for the new trail construction at Allegany State Park coming later this month. Here are the details about what is going on:
The project is to build new singletrack off of Ridge Run. This will be the first (and easiest) of three new trails we have approval for. The location for this new trail is dictated by the topography, and the only ridge in this area that doesn’t already have a trail on it is a couple of miles out on Ridge Run. That means doing things a little differently.
Tools: The tools will be transported to near the work area by the park using their off road vehicle. They will be transported out there Saturday morning, and won’t be coming back until Sunday night.
Quite the spring weekend here in WNY recently. I got about 10 miles of skiing in at the still heavily snow covered Sprague Brook park on Saturday and then a 45 mile road ride on Sunday!
It reminded me what a typical WNY winter the past few months have been. Not a lot of snow in Buffalo, but lots of lake effect down south. Last winter, with no snow and a never-frozen Lake Erie, we had an early spring and were out on the trails in no time. This year is more typical, with the snow actually more deep than unusual at many of our favorite riding places now in early March.
With the snow gone in Buffalo and the northtowns, and the mercury hitting 60 for a day, it is even more important to remember that our riding places are all in the buckle of the snow belt, and will be sporting skiers for a while to come. We say typically April 15 +/- is when the trails are ready in most years. Last year it was earlier, but this year, it is looking later. Stay tuned to the trail condition reports to find when they are ready to ride.
