|WNYMBA gets new insurance policy|

Normally that is not news, but recently it became news. Most MTB clubs carry insurance like any responsible organization. For the last few years, many if not most IMBA affiliated clubs and IMBA chapters (WNYMBA used to be an affiliate, but two years ago we became a chapter) got their insurance this way: IMBA purchased a master policy for about $230,000 a year, and affiliates and chapters, if they wanted, could purchase insurance though this master policy (the clubs' payments covering most, but not all, of the full premium IMBA paid).
However, after extensive negotiations, the insurance carrier IMBA used decided that they would only extend the coverage if the premium increased to $400,000, and that IMBA would have to pay the whole premium up front instead of in installments. IMBA negotiated as much as they could and were even able to get two 2-month extensions of the old policy. But ultimately, IMBA realized that (a) the cash flow was not set up for a cutting a single $400,000 check, and (b) with such a steep rise in costs, they expected that many of the affiliated clubs and chapters would decide to seek insurance elsewhere to avoid a near doubling of rates, so that very little of that $400,000 would end up being covered by affiliates and chapters. So they made the only decision they could make and instructed affiliates and chapters to seek other options.
WNYMBA secured a new policy with a different insurer for about the same cost as the previous one. One thing different is you probably noticed the disclaimers we added to the website. Our new insurer asked us to add them, so we did. We will also have to double down on waivers at club rides and work days, but that should not be much of a problem.
