Our 1st "Ride First - Meet After" of 2015 - Wed. May 20th

We're moving our next meeting from the stuffy, indoor, wintertime confines of the northtowns to the wide open spaces of the country! Join us at the Colden Country Inn on Wednesdsay May 20th at 7:30PM for our first "remote" meeting of the new year. Get in your after-work ride at Sprague Brook Park (right up the road from the Inn in Colden, NY) and then stop on the way home for pizza and the latest MTB updates and gossip for Western New York. Not a WNYMBA member? No problem - you're welcome as long as you "Speak" mountain bike!

Trails are not nearly ready to ride!

Trails are not nearly ready to ride!

Someone out scouting (on foot) trail work projects today saw some folks out riding.  Please, please, please, the trails are not even close to being ready yet.  The picture on the left was taken only a little over a week ago.  Sure the snow is mostly (but not all) gone in most of the riding areas, but that is only because it has been raining quite a bit over the last week. Remember, WNYMBA is not the "Trail Police".  Actually in Erie County, the parks department was toying with the day of setting when the trails are formally open.  WNYMBA just knows that keeping access to the trails means keeping them in great shape.  And riding them ridght after snow melt can damage them for the whole year.  Rutting up the trails before they have had a chance to settle from the frost heave has a much greater impact than riding after an August shower. And it is not just WNYMBA.  Just check out other MTB clubs are saying.  Here's a quick sampler: http://nemba....

E-ville April 11 Trail Work Day Cancelled due to snow!

Unbelievably, our second work day is also cancelled this year!  This is a view of Mutton Hollow Road.  It is the same in both directions.  I don't really want to have to have folks hike up to the work area, so we will have cancel this one as well.  But Sprague Brook is still on for Sunday!

Yes, there really is a lot of snow left - No Fooling

Only once before in the last couple of decades was there skiing still at Sprague Brook in April.  To nobody's surprise, this year was the second time in recent history.  There's lots of snow everywhere!

April 4 Sprague work day Cancelled

This photo was taken during an awesome day of skiing today, less than one week from the planned April 4 work day.  Saw several fat bikes out there today riding the main singletrack loop as well; good day for that, too. True, there are some warm days forecast over the next week, but we've decided to go ahead and cancel the April 4 work day at Sprague. The new first work day will be the following Saturday, April 11, at Ellicottville, with a Sprage work day the next Sunday on April 12.

Our insurance company has "strongly suggested" that we tell you that Mountain Biking can be dangerous. If you're visiting this site it's very likely that you're already aware that if you insist on having a good time by riding your mountain bike, eventually you will almost certainly fall down and collect any number of boo-boos, dings and injuries, serious or otherwise, but we have to tell you anyway.

Mountain Biking is a potentially hazardous activity carrying a significant risk of bodily injury and even death. Mountain biking should only be undertaken if you have a complete awareness of these risks. You can reduce the level of risk by wearing a helmet and by riding within your own skill level.
