Whether we like it or not, the days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder and the mid-week evening rides are almost at an end for the year. So, we're shifting our monthly meetings back north into the Buffalo area for a while.

Join us for our October Meeting at Santora's at 7:00 PM on Wednesday October 22nd at 1402 Millersport Hwy, Williamsville, 14221. The restaurant is located across the street from the Marriott Hotel in the Millersport Hwy/Maple Rd. area, near the UB North Campus. Come on out and hang with your fellow MTB riders while we bring everyone up to date on WNYMBA's latest projects and news over great pizza and beer.

Don't be shy. Everyone is welcome and we can absolutely certify that no new member has been bitten since that one guy tried to reach past Todd for the last slice!

Allegany State Park staffer, friend to WNYMBA and club member Adele Wellman is looking for mountain bikers to star in a NYS Parks promotional "Photo Shoot" at ASP. The date is Thursday October 9th. You'll get a free lunch, get to spend a day in the outdoors riding your bike and maybe even become New York's 2014 MTB poster child!

If you'd like to help promote mountain biking and NYS Parks, give Adele a call at 716-354-9101 x236, or e-mail her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . She'll be happy to fill in the rest of the details.

Great start to the Fall trail work days

We had a great turnout for the first fall work day on Saturday.  Special thanks go out to Thom Wright.  We had received permission from DEC to let Thom use his ATV with his home-built "drag box" which breaks up the organic soil and really cuts down the work it takes to establish the trail tread.  Thom dragged most of the trail (and back), and we had a great crew to help pull the organic stuff off.  We worked north from the yellow-gated dirt road that bisects the white trail and replacement trail.  We made it quite a ways north, but still have lots to do.  Good thing we have 5 more days planned this fall!.

Trail closure signs posted prematurely.

We all know that we are losing access to the original white trail alignment for the section between the tower and the CCC forest road.  (If not, read all about it).

As you recall, the old trail would remain shared use until the replacement trail is complete, but we had to finish the replacement by the end of 2014.  We had 4 work days in the spring to partially clear the corridor, and have six days scheduled this fall to complete the trail.

We have contacted the DEC to remove these signs until the replacement trail is complete. (Update: DEC has removed them for this section of trail).

Please make an effort to make one or more of the work days this fall so we can complete the trail.

The replacement trail has been designed to be bigger (longer) and better than the old trail, so please respect the closure when it comes into effect later this year, and help ride in the new route and make it the best around.

Insect-damage tree removal planned for Golden Hill. Trail to be maintained

The DEC advised us this morning in a phone call that the logging/salvage required as a result of the tent caterpillar infestation at Golden hill that he discussed with WNYMBA a year or so ago, will likely begin this winter.

It's planned that the contractor will complete the work over the winter, including restoration of any damage that might occur on the trail and trail corridor. The DEC is working with the contractor to minimize any such damage and will post signs for both bikers and the contract workers to be aware of each others presence during the logging operation.

Our insurance company has "strongly suggested" that we tell you that Mountain Biking can be dangerous. If you're visiting this site it's very likely that you're already aware that if you insist on having a good time by riding your mountain bike, eventually you will almost certainly fall down and collect any number of boo-boos, dings and injuries, serious or otherwise, but we have to tell you anyway.

Mountain Biking is a potentially hazardous activity carrying a significant risk of bodily injury and even death. Mountain biking should only be undertaken if you have a complete awareness of these risks. You can reduce the level of risk by wearing a helmet and by riding within your own skill level.
