Outer Harbor MTB Trail Moves Forward with Selection of Design Firm

As was reported last fall, the ECHDC had scrapped the original plan for large development on the outer harbor in favor of faster, lighter, cheaper alternatives.  Thanks to ECHDC's soliciting and listening to ideas from the public, including a proposal from WNYMBA, the revised master plan (http://eriecanalharbor.com/outer-harbor/PDF/Outer_Harbor_Blueprint.pdf) included an MTB park on portions of the outer harbor land. Not much has happened publicly over the last year since the revised plan was released, as the ECHDC was working on procuring a design firm for the park and the other 5 or  improvements to be made under the new 2015 plan.  Last week, ECHDC announced the selection of Trowbridge as the design firm, and reaffirmed the MTB course to be included in the design (http://news.wbfo.org/post/mountain-bike-course-approved-buffalos-outer-harbor).  WNYMBA will remain in communication with ECHDC as this exciting new development unfolds.

Fall 2016 Trail Work Schedule Announced

It may not feel like fall yet, but it sure is getting darker faster.  That means it's time for the fall work schedule.  We hope you can make it to one or two this fall.  We have tried to schedule around major events, but do have one event on Oct. 8 (fall fest weekend) where we hope to have some boy scouts helping out.  We have events scheduled every weekend up through November.  See you on the trails!   Web page calendar Link Meetup Link (same info)

Allegheny National Forest wants to open trails - Tell them you agree!!

Below is the text of a press release today from IMBA (meaning its chapters WNYMBA and NAMBA, with assistance from our regional rep Anthony Duncan). The TL;DR version is this: The Forest Service is proposing to open some trails (12 miles!) just south of Allegany State Park that are now closed to bikes. Wilderness groups oppose this. The proposed plan will not be implemented unless you contact the forest service with your support at this e-mail address: comments-eastern-allegheny-This email address is being protected from spambots. Erie County Parks Master Plan receives funding

As you read elsewhere, WNYMBA has been tracking the upcoming re-write of the Erie County Parks Master Plan.  Last time around (2002-2003), WNYMBA worked hard to get Hunters Creek open to bikes (did you know that bikes were not allowed there until 2002?!) and got into the plan to go-ahead to develop the trail system at Sprague. We hope to be just as involved this time around, and have equally great results, hopefully opening up a new park for bike access and trail construction.  As the article linked below indicates, the county is looking towards passive recreation alternatives, and MTB fits the bill.  We have worked well with the county the past 15 years and hope to continue this with next master plan.  Read/listen to more about it here: http://news.wbfo.org/post/erie-county-funding-new-master-plan-parks

Our insurance company has "strongly suggested" that we tell you that Mountain Biking can be dangerous. If you're visiting this site it's very likely that you're already aware that if you insist on having a good time by riding your mountain bike, eventually you will almost certainly fall down and collect any number of boo-boos, dings and injuries, serious or otherwise, but we have to tell you anyway.

Mountain Biking is a potentially hazardous activity carrying a significant risk of bodily injury and even death. Mountain biking should only be undertaken if you have a complete awareness of these risks. You can reduce the level of risk by wearing a helmet and by riding within your own skill level.
